a break from raking.

1. Reply and I will write something about you.
2. I will then tell you what song or band reminds me of you.
3. Next, I will tell you who you remind me of (actor, celebrity, etc.).
4. Last, I will try to pick a single word that I think best describes you.
5. Then you put this in your journal.

stolen from Peter (aside: do you actually go by pete, or is that something the guys in Sex Sells did?)

i love the random music memes.

Put your favorite music player on shuffle. List the first lines/couplets of the first 50 songs, no matter how lame.

Ask friends to identify the songs in comments. (Hai frendz! Plz to identify these songs in my comments!). Bonus points given for identification of the correct artist on multiple-covers songs. Madcap fun ensues.

I didn't look up the lyrics, just typed them in, so some of them may be only phonetically accurate.
some repeats on artist )

that took way too long.

back to doing the dew

mitzi has ruined googlism for me. if it were a game, she would have just won.

And on the pirate meme from H.W., if i use my new house, ira's my first mate, and if i use perk, yancy is. and i couldn't make that decision.

interesting notes from the "genre" tag of my mp3 collection:
3 libras: "black metal"

In the blues category:

Save Berlin
Bill Nye The Science Guy (it's really loud and fast)
an acoustic version of my song "voyage"
peroxide's "we want" (sex! with! your mom!)
Exit music for a film

Both Matt Nathanson's "we'll recover" and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles' "Out of Our Shells" are in the genre "genre"

Summer of 69: Punk.

Violent Femmes' "color me once" - Techno.

"Unclassifiable" - "unforgettable" with ani & chan, cupajo's "King Lear"

Bueller?

well just because.

so last night was band practice, and ira gave us an exercise in endurance, the repeated recorded version of which is about 7 minutes long. essentially he wanted tyler and i to do something very similar, but different rhythmically. so i started out just adding an extra eighth note on every phrase through. then i tried subtracting. then i did both. i found a cool sort of pattern, but i didn't use exactly that on the second one, i think i stumbled along another different cool pattern. trying to figure out what i was doing by listening back to the second one.

a lot of my favorite players have gone seriously into theory for a long time and then stopped thinking about it, and that background has allowed them to create cool things intuitively musical. kim thayil. rivers cuomo (ok, the first two albums.) some others.

but the one song this longer exercise reminded me of is this story of a band... the band was well known for its musical theory and stuff like that. the guitarist, let's call him "matt," came in with a riff. he said "i have this, but it might not fit for us, it's just straight 4/4 and kinda poppy, but we've been having more material in that direction, maybe we can try it." so they played a little bit on it, and the drummer, let's call him "pete," stopped him and said: "that's not in 4. that's in 13/8." the third member, "andrew," didn't say anything except "cool." it's one of my favorite songs. the moral: sometimes you don't have to think about it, sometimes you do.

who it is revealed later.

in other news... there is too much. i'm survivin.

tribulations

Hey all... if anyone has an extra hard copy of yesterday's washington times, save it for me and the perk.

it's been quite a bit since i've written... that's not to say a lot has happened. a lot has occurred to me to record in this space, but i haven't had the motivation. the knowledge of when i next get a weekend makes my current busyness at work that much tougher to deal with. I ask myself why I put up with all the things that I'm not happy with, and though there are positive aspects, the answer is because i HAVE to. between the variety of personal debts, and the actual credit companies looking for their piece, i need to be paying out for a while yet before i save up, or i get anything for myself. luckily, there's no big gifty holidays for a bit.

adding to that whole debt thing is arctos's rather expensive repair, which after all was caused by the water spillage, it just wanted to delay things for a while. so people who i've promised things that deal with computers, be patient. it'll be a little bit.

an impromptu laborious youth reunion occurred tuesday night, in part thanks to [info]dv8dragonfly... i was amused, and who knows, indeed. dave and i have had our rough spots, but isn't that what makes good music?

I was pondering the other day the number of amazing bands that seem to thrive on conflict. page & plant & john paul jones, townshend & daltrey & moon, jagger & richards and watts, hetfield & ulrich & mustaine & burton & newsted & hammett, steven tyler & joe perry, vince neil and tommy lee, crosby/stills/nash/young (both in that and in their original bands), clapton/bruce/baker, slash & axl & izzy, weiland and the deleos, roth & van halen & hagar, cherone and bettencourt, ozzy & tony iommi, reznor & richard patrick or pretty much anyone consistently... All these permutations have ultimately respect and love for each other, but clash in such a way that their shared creations are more appealing than anything they've done on their own.

it's just an intriguing conceit or pattern in music.

more later. i have caffeine to convince me to post.

romana's meme, for a silly upturn.

10-hour workdays create boredom, and hence livejournaling.

Here's what you do:.
Fill in each "position" with the musician of your chioce. Preferably someone who already has an established musical career. However, that doesn't mean it has to be someone everyone, or anyone, on your friends list has heard of. To give a frame of reference, please include the musical ensemble(s) that the artist is best known for. If it is for solo work, please note that as well.

This can be as outlandish and unlikely as you want it to be. And yes, dead people are allowed. If you absolutely insist, one artist may fill more than one position. (so, your bassist could also be your singer/songwriter.) Feel free to add positions as well.

Drums: Josh Freese (a perfect circle, as well as tons of studio stuff)
Keyboards: Tony Banks (Genesis)
Bass: Flea (RHCP)
Rhythm Guitar: Tom Morello (Rage Against The Machine, Audioslave) should be able to swap strang noises with:
Lead Guitar: Steve Vai. that should be fairly obvious. plus, I gotta add:
Extranumerary: Jonny Greenwood (Radiohead)
Lead Vocalist: 1992 Eddie Vedder. (pearl jam) I think he's dead, except for some concerts.
Songwriter: Lou Barlow. (folk implosion, sebadoh, dinosaur jr.) just to get him in the mix.

Also changed some to avoid people who already are in the same band.
Honorable mentions include j. darnielle, t. yorke, m. mccready, d. carey, p. collins, p. gabriel, m. rutherford, s. hackett, 1995 c. cornell, z. & t. hanson, and many more.
